• First Blog: What is SteinyStats?

Hey world. This is my first attempt at blogging in the big year of 2025. I’ve been meaning to start a personal passion project like this for quite some time but haven’t been able to due to a variety of factors. Regardless, here we are.

You! Yes, you! No, I am not trying to sell you insurance, please stop walking away from me. I want to talk to you about sports! You know, that thing that all the young kids are talking about these days. Oh, and something that these same hip, young kids are probably NOT into are statistics. That and educational television.

What makes our lives fulfilling? I probably sound like an intro to every pretentious video essay you’ve ever seen on YouTube, but it’s a good starting point for what I want to outline in this first post. So, what actually makes our lives meaningful then? Is it having a loving family along with receiving a well-paying salary? What about just being happy? Or what about being the best possible version of yourself? I honestly don’t know, I bet if you asked Socrates this question he’d probably say just chopping it up with the bros. What I DO know is that there is some fundamental aspect of the human being that is attached to the realm of sports. It’s inescapable really, I mean what else would we have as a modern society without two individual entities competing for athletic supremacy over a common obstacle? It’s in our nature quite frankly. The first Olympics were held in 776 BC, and Joey Chestnut ate 83 hot dogs in 10 minutes 2,800 years later. The commonality? The audience. We are mesmerized by feats of athletic greatness. Like I mentioned, its in our very nature to be sports fans.

So what about the statistical side? Where does that fall? Well, you can’t quantify moments in sports. The “stats” part of “SteinyStats” really just prefaces what I want to discuss. These stats won’t be incredibly in depth, but I want to make a specific topic fascinating to a person that might not be a fan of said sport or topic. Another thing I really want to expand on is connecting these specific stats for a player/sport with a larger, more external theme. This is could be related to sports in some instances, but I believe connecting the dots between two uncommon concepts offers a greater creative leash. I will not be highlighting something like a legendary season a player had and just say “oh wow he really tore it up this year, video game numbers, 2018 Lebron, Tavon Austin highlight tape, etc” because there’s no creative juice there. Plus, those things cater to a specific audience. This is aimed for EVERYONE to enjoy, no matter your experience or expertise regarding sports knowledge. You won’t have to know stats like wRC+ or VORP to get the big picture. This isn’t calculus, this is a fun writing piece for people to enjoy. Think of each post as a short story relating to some topic related to sports statistics, that’s really the crux of what I am trying to here.

Well, that’s more or less what I wanted to get across with this first post. I hope that whoever reads it gets a solid grasp on what my objective is with this blog, and what I’ll be discussing.

Guess I’ll start working on my fantasy rankings until the next post on this site. This is finally going to be the year for Kyle Pitts.
